The Lucksmiths Naturaliste Lyrics
1.Camera-Shy

Here's me in 1981
Squinting into a sinking sun
Ankle-deep in the Pacific
In the foreground are my friends
Grinning madly at the lens
They look heliolithic

Again in 1993
A Polaroid you took of me
In a long-forgotten loungeroom
A hand outstretched before my face
The nervous smile, the downcast gaze
I didn't know myself around you

You seem surprised
And I see why:
You just realised I'm camera shy

So if it's not too much to ask
Let's just let the moment pass
I have no wish to be reminded
Of just how awkward I can be
Please don't point that thing at me
Your eyes are widening behind it

You seem surprised
And I see why:
You just realised I'm camera shy

2.The Sandringham Line

She's given it some thought
And it's giving her some grief
Could it be she's bored beyond belief?
By the time she says goodbye
She's looking somewhere else
Stifling a sigh and gritting teeth

At the open door she pauses
It's grey and wet and warm
Before the pending storm
Every now and then she misses horses
We're too young for regrets
This is the closest that she gets

So I sleep in with the cynics
While she pushes from her mind
The twenty-seven minutes of the Sandringham line
The suburbs sliding past
Stretching to the sea
Her fingers brush the glass unconsciously

At the open door she pauses
It's grey and wet and warm
Before the pending storm
Every now and then she misses horses
We're too young for regrets
Surely we're too young for regrets

I sat backwards on the train
And suddenly the city was further and further in front of me

3.Take This Lying Down

I was looking for something
To soothe your aching head
Where did I put the recipe for breakfast in bed?
Three days stright, drinking late
Sleeping on the fire escape
And in that nightie a flaming sypmphony in red

From your window
There's a breeze and there are views
There are trees and roofs
And streets with people on their way
On their way this afternoon
On their way but not a clue
That from the treetops they are begging you to stay

In bed today
In bed today
Rest assured, if you should ever feel the winter cold
Your comfortability will keep you warm when you get old

I invented something new
And if it's all the same to you
I'd like to take some time and try it out
I'd like to try it out on you
Maybe you should take this
Maybe you should take this lying down...

It's almost enough to give you something to think about

4.Midweek Midmorning

You were never one for sleeping late
But oh! the working week can wait
We ought to spend today together
You might be less than overjoyed
Unimpressed and unemployed
But I refuse to waste this weather

A midweek midmorning to ourselves
It would be misspent somewhere else
We wasted most of winter feeling
That we should stay inside instead
Lie on our backs on our bed
Beneath the stains upon the ceiling

I was never one for getting up
And catercorner from the pub
I found it difficult deciding
Between the indoors and the out-
But overhead there's not a cloud
That couldn't once have been skywriting

You beside and bluer skies above me
Spring fashion week and don't we both look lovely
Yeah, you beside and bluer skies above me
Spring fashion week and don't we both look lovely

5.The Perfect Crime

The sun is on the hilltop
Casting shadows on things below
The afternoon has left the valley cold
I raise my eyebrows and grip the dashboard
You take the bends like you built the road
This is the road you travel
Every time you come home

The vision awe-inspiring
Reception is very poor
We listen to tapes rewinding slow
This is always exciting
When we happen to get along
But we seem to end up fighting
It's just an hour or two too long
Too long

This is the perfect crime
When the creek is high
On poplar trees the turning leaves
Pass the time

We're always asking questions
Casting doubts on the things we know
The afternoon has left the valley cold
If this is a lesson in life
If this is a test of love
I'll circle letter D all of the above
Because that's close enough
Close enough

This is the perfect crime
When the creek is high
On poplar trees the turning leaves
Pass the time

You left your sentence open
You left without a sound
The words we kept unspoken
Bury them in the ground

6.What You'll Miss

In the morning it felt like the world had stopped
And clenched like a giant fist up tight
But then you noticed the dust still dropped
And danced through the bedroom window light

It's the woodsmoke smell of winter
It's the sad things that you'll miss
Like the woodsmoke smell of winter
And the sad things like this

Let it all come down like fog on a cold field
Let it all come down like frost on the lawn
Let it all come down like leaves in a teacup
Let it all come down like trees in a storm

There'll be cars on the street soon enough
And someone will come and collect the bins
Everyone will return to their everyday stuff
And you'll sleep through the mess that you're in

It's the woodsmoke smell of winter
It's the sad things that you'll miss
Like the woodsmoke smell of winter
And the sad things like this

Let it all come down like fog on a cold field
Let it all come down like frost on the lawn
Let it all come down like leaves in a teacup
Let it all come down like trees in a storm
Let it all come down like sleep on your eyelids
Let it all come down softly as snow onto snow
Let it all come down seeing the river below you
Let it all come down feeling your fingers let go

It's the woodsmoke smell of winter

7.There Is A Boy That Never Goes Out

Put the radiator on it's freezing
I'm coming over later on this evening
And leave the television off
At least until the conversation's run its course

Ba-ba-bada-ba-ba goes the backing vocal
I'm trying not to be so antisocial
Truth be told, I'm not entirely hopeful
I've woken up on one too many floors
But my favourite was yours

It's freezing this evening...

8.What Passes For Silence

She knows how pathetic it looks
She's read it in books
And seen it in strangers
Eyes on the fickle spring skies
Awaiting the moment eveything changes
Unsure what to hope for when it does

What the hell happened last night?
Their first ever fight
And those far away sirens
She sighed to herself for fuck's sake
Lying awake in what passes for silence
Matching her breathing to his

What she's wondering is:
How did they come to this?
How did they come to this?
How did they come to this?

9.Stayaway Stars

Yeah, you're upset
So am I, so am I
I sometimes forget just how seldom you cry
And thus how much I hate it when you do

Yeah, you're a mess, more or less
So am I
I sometimes forget there are stars in the sky
So nonchalant, though thoroughly thought through

Say you're OK
And I'll say so am I
And we'll call it a day
So goodnight, so goodbye
It's dark enough to disappear into

What sorry sights we sometimes are
These sameshit nights under stayaway stars
These sameshit nights in the saddest bars
The city lights and the stayaway stars

10.Sleep Well

We shook hands and parted ways
The sun danced on his eyes
Financial matters were cast aside
I'll sleep well tonight

I had to leave this place behind
See some colour for the first time in my life
You said you were ready
But you weren't as ready as I
And I'll sleep well tonight

The sound of the street
Happiness complete

Looking back on brighter days
A microscope on how the simple things are done
But don't look too long to the sun
'Cause you'll see faults
As there are faults in everyone

I had to leave this place behind
See some colour for the first time in my life
You said you were ready
But you weren't as ready as I
And I'll sleep well tonight

Spring and summer meet
Happiness complete

It's all clear this afternoon
Time has passed me by
But you'll find out all too soon
You'll find out all too soon
That time was wrong and I was right
I was right

Time and time and time and time again
Time and time and time and time again
Hey hey cuckoo
Running away or running to?

Time and time and time and time again
Time and time and time and time again
From every window a different view
Running away or running to

11.The Shipwreck Coast

Clouds and clifftops close
Grey like all the ghosts
It's cold on the shipwreck coast this morning
You're looking for Lorne
A coat to keep you warm
A scarf to keep me from noticing you're yawning

The grass in the graveyard grows
Grey like all the ghosts
It's eerie on the shipwreck coast this evening
I know that we'd agreed
I'd try and pay no heed
But history is all that I believe in
